Mike Liebhold By: Cindy Forni

To be honest I found it all very interesting and unique. It seems like a very fun and very detailed job. What also stood out was the section on the "sense maker," where they use a stategic approach to try and figure out what the future holds for us, first with FORSIGHT, INSIGHT, ACTION, and MAKING A DIFFERENCE. All in all for lack of better words, it was cool.

Thank You :)

Gattaca Insights + Questions By: Cindy Forni

1) What stood out to me in the movie Gattaca is how the writers of the movie explore a world of genetically mortified people. Today we are doing that exact same thing, not to the same degree but it is still exists. Now these days if you have the money you can walk into a sperm bank and pay for whatever you think the best child will be for you. You can chose what type of baby you would like from eye color to I.Q, from height to skin color, its all there for the picking’s
2) The 2nd subject of found insightful is how, the character playing the part of Umma Thurman (Irene), even in a powerful position there is still a gender difference. She is still beneath the men in her organization.

In terms of Ideology, Hegemony and power, and how it invades peoples lives in the film is very clear. I see it as a constant struggle to be better than the next person. Throughout the film, survival of the fittest is just as clear. An example would be how at the end of the movie the brothers compete against each other, in a swimming competition.
The two frames I chose for the movie and how they apply in the film, is Frame 1: Gender Differences at work by how the Umma Thurman and the fake Jerome engage

with each other throughout the movie. How Umma Thurman (Irene) is constantly portrayed as weaker even though she is in a position of power in the organization she belongs to.
The 2nd Frame I chose is Gender Identity as Organizational Performance. I chose this frame because I believe that this frame works in conjunction with Frame 1. From the micro practices throughout the film and the emotion of labor, to how the main characters refer to each other from moment to moment. There is a significant level of class relationships.
A true and funny experience I have had is, I am an Emergency Medical Technician and the guys that I work with assume I cannot park the Ambulance. It’s the running joke even though it’s obvious that I can or else I wouldn’t have a license. So they back me out of the E.R and so do the security guards and the police officers and anyone else who’s in the E.R parking lot at the time, its funny but so embarrassing. I chose this story because I do work in a very Masculine field where the assumptions are that women are more nurturing so they give us the old patients, women, and children to take care of on a call to and emergency. The Guys like doing the dirty work, they’ll always check the ambulance out first and gas it up if need be and they take the emergency calls that are very aggressive from gun shot wounds to car accidents. Although I don’t mind it the gender differences clearly exist and how it affects ones performance at work.

Driving Forces

What I see as a definete driving force and a great example of a critical uncertaty, is transportation. Our population keeps getting bigger and bigger. Just look at 880, the freeways are becoming more jam-packed with each day that passes by. I wonder what tranportation system will look like in 10 years. There has been talk about a bullet train from here to L.A in 2 hrs imagine that. As far a a predetermined element well, I'll use the same example our population this time tied into sex. How about the contraceptives as a predetermined element. Scientist are contantly trying to come up with new forms of contraceptives like condoms or a new birth control pill for females and now even for males.

Office Space

Good luck with your layoffs, all right? I hope your firings go really well. (Peter Gibbons)

This quote stood out to me b/c it takes place at a very important part of the movie. Where the two men are talking to each of the empolyees and are trying to establish who they want to lay-off. Peter acts like a jerk, walks in with sandels and jeans, not caring for the job or his position. This is the beginning of Peter's transition, into be a care free guy, he is very disrespectul, granted the two men that the company brought it were a joke but you should never act out of term in front of your employer. There is a code of conduct that he definetly defies. How this relates to the chapters we have been reading, well Peter has become a driving force in his own right, not taking anything from anyone. As well as not knowing what the future will bring for him is clearly an example of critical uncertanty.

The question I pose is what if there was someone above Peter Gibbons bose, someone to oversee his work and the work of the group as a whole. Maybe someone that Peter could have talked to in order to avoid all of the things that could of been avoided in that office?

I thought a human resources department is a great idea as stated in this blogg already, but going a little further than that what if there were assistants or coordinators or even an union to assist employees.

OrGcOmM Ch.2&3 ReSpOnSe

Ch.2

What I found interesting in chapter two was the different models of communication. The different models are the Information-transfer, Transcational, Strategic-control, Communication as balance and constraint. Information-transfer has to do with the exchange of informaiton and the transmission of meaning, which acts like a "pipeline."(ch.2) The transcational model is something where the sender and receiver are simultaneous, allowing feedback. In Strategic-control this acts like a tool to control the enviornment, which identifies the communicators goals. All in all the different models of communication work together in preparation for a better understanding of communication and its complexities.

Ch.3

This chapter has to do with how management and employees work together to either avoid misunderstandings and/or to better undstand eachother in the work place. This chapter is based on the assumption of sometimes preconcieved notion of who someone is and how you think they will react based on the knowledge you already have. So we build narratives as stated in some of the pp.sildes for the chapter, they used the example of music. I also thought it was very interesting was the section where in the narrative it said humans fuction like machines and that managers think and workers work. I would like to think of myself as a little of both, I'm a thinker and a worker.
